Carmen, who inspires both admiration and hatred among women and is desired and judged by men, changes the world around her. The animosity she faces stems from the desire she provokes. Director Marie-Eve Signeyrole, in her debut at the Latvian National Opera, sets Carmen's story in a suburban environment—with children provoking the police, conflicts among drug dealers, and street artists and dancers striving for self-expression. This small, violent world highlights the harshness of human relationships. In this setting, sensuality, desire, and freedom are suppressed by the social context. Carmen's presence becomes a striking contrast to her surroundings—a new type of feminism that plays with the rules set by men.
