MELANHOLIJA is a drama play in Riga at Dailes Theatre, running from 15 to 24 January 2027. Larss von Trier and Jari Juutinen’s story about beginnings and endings unfolds at a wedding in a luxurious manor, which stretches into a strange, almost surreal night. A mysterious planet called Melancholia appears in the sky, and as the familiar world begins to collapse, one person decides to finally start living. The production is directed by Toms Treinis, with dramatization by Jari Juutinen. The cast includes Katrīna Griga, Kaspars Dumburs, Ilze Ķuzule-Skrastiņa, Ģirts Krūmiņš, Vita Vārpiņa, Gints Grāvelis, Klāvs Kristaps Košins or Ralfs Puzāns, and Lauris Subatnieks. Based on the 2011 film, the play combines disaster-film stereotypes, Wagnerian motifs and family drama. Translated from Finnish by Maima Grīnberga.
