"Giselle" is one of the earliest major ballets from the Romantic era that has survived to this day. Set against the idyll of a rural village, the story follows a naïve girl's first love, her betrayal, madness, and death. After death, she enters a hauntingly beautiful world of wilis—the spirits of dead maidens who make men dance to their deaths at night—yet love ultimately triumphs over fate.
