
Spēlfilma "Uļa"
The feature film "Uļa" will be shown at Balvu Kultūras un atpūtas centrs in Balvi on 10 October 2026. Directed by Viesturs Kairišs, this visually and emotionally powerful film explores identity, coming of age and the search for belonging in Latvia in the late 1960s. Uļa is a teenage Old Believer whose height is approaching two metres. When her class photograph reaches basketball coaches, she is taken to Riga to join a famous basketball team. As she trains and struggles with her height and identity, Uļa faces one of the most important choices of her life: hide herself or become the best basketball player in the world. The film’s concept creator and lead actor is Kārlis Arnolds Avots. It is based on the biography of legendary Latvian basketball player Uļjana Semjonova and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
