Opening of Liepāja 2027
The European Capital of Culture year will begin with special events across cultural venues in Liepāja, South Kurzeme, and Kuldīga regions. On January 22, opening events will take place in South Kurzeme and Kuldīga, highlighting local culture and creativity. In Liepāja on January 23, the morning starts with amber searching and gathering on the beach, followed by the international exhibition “Baltic Amber Amazes the World” at Liepāja Museum. Throughout the same day, visitors can join the "(Un)Peace Path" audio story walk, revealing layers of the city's history and personal stories. Five performance stops will introduce the thematic lines of the Liepāja 2027 program and outline upcoming events. The day will culminate with two major musical happenings: an open-air concert performance "City Symphony" created by local artists and collectives, and an opening concert ceremony at the "Great Amber" concert hall, featuring the premiere of Ēriks Ešenvalds’s new work "Symphony of Wind". After these events, celebrations will continue throughout the city in bars, restaurants, cafes, clubs, galleries, and other cultural venues.
