Oscar Wilde's French-language drama was translated into German and became the libretto for Richard Strauss's opera, which premiered on December 9, 1905 at the Royal Opera House in Dresden. The Latvian National Opera has seen four productions of "Salome", with Milda Brehmane-Štengele, Žermēna Heine-Vāgnere, Solveiga Raja, and Ieva Kepe performing the lead role. The story follows Princess Salome of Judea, whose passion for the prophet Jochanaan leads to tragic events. When Herod asks Salome to dance, she demands the prophet's head as payment. In this new production, director Alvis Hermanis sets the story in contemporary Israel, highlighting the complex interplay of ideologies and religions.
